Stoke-on-Trent

The Study Site

The Study Site is to the south of the city centre in an area of redevelopment called City Waterside. The study site will be the first to be developed and is the 'flagship' which should capture people's imagination and set the tone for the development of the area and RENEW's work across the region.

The masterplan for City Waterside identified: high quality urban living, green networks and distinctive industrial heritage as features to be developed across the area. The study site is traversed by a wide canal, contains a new primary school and nursery, an old school building and a listed ceramics factory (now available for new uses).

A mix of uses is envisaged to include work-spaces and a range of residential accommodation. Development must be well connected via a range of modes of travel.

The study site sits within a wider 15 year development programme.

The Project Brief

The site is set in a variety of scales and overlapping historical structures. Over time it has been cleared of mostly dilapidated high-density residential terraces, those remaining are being gradually cleared, leaving the street pattern for adaptation.

The site is edged to the west by a major road leading into the city centre, which is flanked by larger scale buildings. To suit shifts in scale and activity a range of housing types will be sought from adaptable mixed-use buildings to high-density low-rise 'terraces'.

The number of housing units will be set as a minimum giving flexibility to the spatial strategy for the site. The development will pioneer contemporary city centre living in Stoke-on-Trent and will actively seek to sustain and promote a vibrant community and micro economy.

The programme of development for the project site envisages a start on site in summer 2008.
