Sheffield

The study site

The wider study area includes two parallel streets in the Wybourn Estate, a community centre, the escarpment below the site and open landscape to the north. There are opportunities to revisit the idea of the garden or parkland city by making strong relationships between housing, landscape and contemporary amenity.

There is a need to improve movement routes connecting new development and improving access for existing residents. There is an opportunity to intensify the use of green spaces, integrating development with adjacent parkland, natural and cultivated landscapes. There is need to improve amenity for children and young people and promote a welcoming and safe environment for all.

The site is cleared and ready for development. The authority has approved a masterplan and site brief.

The project brief

New development should create mixed communities and promote a positive sense of identity for new and existing communities.

The design concept for the project site should offer a popular and distinctive image for the future, signaling an improved quality of life for the area and for Sheffield. Development should responds sensitively to the unique topography and landscape of the city and the Peak District.

Development should provide a minimum of 140 homes of mixed types that are desirable, future-proofed, affordable and adaptable, creating diversity in the local area. There should be an appropriate and sustainable mix of uses. New homes should maximise the experience of long views of the city.

The intention is to develop designs in 2008 for a start on site in 2010.
