Call for Europan 10 site sponsors

We are calling for site sponsors for Europan 10, the largest housing design competition in the world. The biennial event is run across 22 European countries and is open to young architects and urban and design professionals.

The aim of the competition is to deliver real projects and give local authorities and development teams from across Europe the chance to learn from each other.

Sponsoring a site

Site sponsors get a strong, design-led vision for a quality project, expert advice from CABE on writing a professional site-specific brief, and the opportunity to work with some of the best young design teams in Europe.

The competition is open to two different types of site sponsors:

• Those with confirmed housing projects to deliver
  For those with a confirmed housing project, Europan can set a benchmark for new housing and explore cutting-edge ways of delivering sustainability and mixed use developments.
• Those looking to develop a vision for a scheme
  For sponsors needing to develop an overall vision for their area, Europan can help access innovative design to tackle site-specific challenges, like creating sustainable communities in urban expansion projects.
  

Potential site sponsors need to make an expression of interest by September 2008. The competition itself will open in January 2009, with the final selection being made in December 2009. The sites selected to take part in Europan 10 will have the opportunity to develop their scheme with CABE support, as well as access to project teams in 70 cities across Europe.

Europan 9 sites and winners

Europan 9 in the UK saw Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent in the design spotlight, with 61 teams from across Europe submitting schemes for the three sites. The winning schemes were all by emerging young architectural practices.

In Stoke-on-Trent City Slipway by RCKa incorporated up to 300 new homes and a central public route to the city’s Caldron canal.

In Milton Keynes, a proposal by Tom Russell Architects for A Forest in the City, brought together family and mews style housing and providing 150 new homes.

In Sheffield, the city council believes that Europan provided a good opportunity to discuss delivery issues with other cities. Their site, Skye Edge, has stunning views over the city and received the highest number of entries. The winner was Prewett Bizley’s Urban Grafting scheme for a wide promenade along the ridge.
