Europan 9: Stoke on Trent

Runner-up: Urban Village

Urban Village design

The project

Urban Village proposes terraces of housing set on clearly defined network of neighbourhood streets. The position of routes across the site is informed by the neighbouring access points and desire lines. The central lane is proposed as a car-free neighbourhood street, with parking accommodated at the perimeter of the site.

The housing footprint has continuous ground floor level frontage with upper level accommodation varying dependant on the arrangement and size of units. Private space is either enclosed to the rear or at first floor level, positioned to take advantage of the slope in the site. A canal basin is proposed adjacent to the existing Bridgewater pottery building.

Jury comments

The jury found this proposal modest and elegant, with its careful attempts to draw in the surrounding remnants of the local heritage. The public and private spaces are well defined, making a low-key, very liveable housing scheme.
