Europan 9: Sheffield

Winner: Urban Grafting

Urban Grafting design

The project

Urban Grafting proposes a wide public promenade on the ridge of Sky Edge, intended to open up the view to all. This is backed by a terrace of housing which is broken at certain points to connect back to the existing housing. The intention is that the new housing responds to the existing estate by creating new spaces that are shared, but private.

Jury comments

The jury considered the underlying concept to be strong in addressing the character of the site. The detailed topographical model indicates a good understanding, with the inclusion of a hillside promenade as public space a positive contribution. The intention to knit this development back into the city was evident.

The siting of the houses and their design allows good interfaces with open spaces, views and weather. Neighbourhood assets are well-supported in terms of the existing community centre, the public realm and the creation of long views.
