Europan 9

The Europan 9 competition was launched in January 2006, across 73 sites put forward by towns and cities in 22 European countries. Over 1750 entries were received by the close of the competition in July 2007.

In the UK three sites were proposed, in Milton Keynes, Stoke-on-Trent and Sheffield. These sites pose pressing questions for housing development in the UK – how to create an identity, how to stitch in to existing fabric and how to revive neighbourhoods in our existing city centres.

In the UK, Europan is coordinated and run by CABE, who along with the site sponsors, formulated the briefs based on the actual needs of development on the sites. These site sponsors are now eager to proceed with development.

Crowd at Europan 9 awardsFor all three sites, evidence of the conceptual strength of proposals, and their deliverability, were of paramount importance to the site partners and jury.

The three sites in the UK together received 61 entries. These were shortlisted down to 21, from which 2 winners, 4 runners up and 3 commendations were awarded on 17 January 2007.
