Europan 8

The Europan 8 competition was the first round of the Europan competition run by CABE in the UK, and drew to a close in February 2006. Europan 8 UK received 74 entries from young architects all over Europe, from which 13 entries were shortlisted in the first round of judging. From the 13 shortlisted entries, two winners, four runners-up and two commended schemes were selected.

Europan UK put forward three sites for Europan 8. The brief for each site was thematically linked to the agenda of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's sustainable communities plan, which sets out a long-term programme of action for delivering sustainable communities in both urban and rural areas. It aims to tackle housing supply issues in the South East region, low demand in other parts of the country, and the quality of public spaces.

The winners of the three sites are actively involved with site promoters, working towards turning the competition winning schemes into deliverable projects.

The sites

Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes

This site in the Bradwell Common area of Milton Keynes is adjacent to the city centre. The brief was to investigate new housing typologies which could act as a bridge between suburban neighbourhoods and the proposed high density city centre.
