The jury

A jury panel of nine experts in architecture, urban design and planning is assembled for each participating country. The UK jury members for Europan 10 are yet to be confirmed.

The jurors for Europan 9 were:

Barbara Dunsire

Architecture and Design Manager, architecture MK

Barbara Dunsire

Barbara Dunsire is Architecture and Design Manager at architecture MK, leading a multi-disciplinary team specialising in the design of new schools and community buildings in Milton Keynes. With Chris Bannister, Barbara was a winner in both the Europan 4 and Europan 5 competitions with schemes in Manchester and Sheffield respectively. Previously, Barbara worked in Buckinghamshire County Council Architect's Department and while there was responsible for the design of a number of community and education buildings.

Carol Ainscow

Chairman / Chief Executive, Artisan

Carol Ainscow

The founder and owner of Artisan, Carol Ainscow is one of a new generation of entrepreneurs who have made a significant contribution to regeneration in the UK. Her role in Manchester’s renaissance in recent years is recognised, both in the leisure and property sectors. Artisan has schemes currently in Manchester, Bradford, Sheffield and Liverpool. Carol is a non-executive director of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority.

Christine Hawley

Dean of Bartlett, University College London

Christine Hawley

Christine Hawley is currently Dean of the Bartlett and Head of the Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London. She was previously Director of Architecture at the Bartlett, a lecturer at the Architectural Association and Head of the School of Architecture at the University of East London. She has lectured extensively over the last 20 years throughout the USA, Europe and the Far East. Christine Hawley is also a partner in Christine Hawley and Andrew Porter Architects.

David Rudlin

Director, URBED

David Rudlin

David Rudlin manages URBED (Urbanism Environment and Design) in Manchester. A planner by training, David started his career with Manchester City Council with responsibility for the early stages of the redevelopment of Hulme. He was also secretary of the Homes for Change housing cooperative in Hulme, and responsible for commissioning one of their flagship buildings. Since then he has managed a range of high profile consultancy projects including the Oldham Beyond Vision. David is also author of a number of research reports, which are summarised in a book 'Building the 21st Century Home' and has just been published in China.

Jim McMillan

Assistant Director of Development, Great Places Housing Group

Jim McMillan

Jim was a practising architect in Manchester for several years, specialising in housing and urban design before deciding he could have more influence on the client side. Great Places Housing Group have one of the largest social housing development programmes in the north of England. A champion of quality design with his own organisation’s development programme, Jim encourages designers and his peers to raise expectations of what is possible in the traditionally conservative social housing sector. Jim was joint site sponsor for the Europan 8 site in Oldham and is now working with the development design team to get the scheme built.

John Pringle

Director, Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects

John Pringle

John Pringle is a founding director of Pringle Richards Sharratt. He is also Chair of the Sheffield Urban Design Review Panel, and was previously President of the Architectural Association, Hon. Treasurer of the RIBA, a Member of the RIBA Validation Panel, and an external examiner at Nottingham and London Metropolitan Universities. Major projects include Sheffield Millennium Galleries and Winter Garden, Oldham Cultural Quarter, Hull History Centre, Herbert Art Gallery & Museum Coventry, and Shrewsbury Music School.

Neave Brown

Architect and Artist

Neave Brown

Neave Brown chose architecture in favour of fine art more than 50 years ago. Since then he has built housing and public buildings including Alexandra Road and developments in Italy and the Netherlands, as well as exhibitions for the Arts Council and the Tate Gallery. He has taught in schools of architecture in England, the States and Germany. While building his last development in Eindhoven he reverted to fine art, completing a degree, and now works and exhibits in both London and France.

Peter St John

Partner, Caruso St John Architects

Peter St John

Peter St John established Caruso St John Architects with Adam Caruso in 1990. The practice has gained an international reputation for designing contemporary projects in the public realm and is perhaps best known for the New Art Gallery in Walsall, completed in 2000. They are currently working on a new Centre for Contemporary Art in Nottingham, have recently been appointed architects to Tate Britain for the coming five years and are also working on several large scale private and public housing projects for volume housebuilders in Bordeaux and Toulouse. Peter has also taught widely, at the University of North London, the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland, the University of Bath and Harvard University.

Ton Schaap

Senior Urban Planner, City of Amsterdam

Ton Schaap

Ton Schaap trained as an urban designer, and has been Senior Urban Planner for the City of Amsterdam’s city planning department since 1983. Whilst there he has been responsible for numerous urban renewal, public space, housing and mixed use schemes across Amsterdam. Ton also teaches at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, and lectures widely both in the Netherlands and in Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada and the USA.
